Vietnam Public Holiday Observance Rules

1. Entitlement to Public Holidays

- Vietnam observes several public holidays annually, including national and cultural celebrations. Employees are entitled to fully paid days off on public holidays as mandated by Vietnam’s Labor Code. Source

2. Substitution of Holidays Falling on a Weekend

- If a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following working day is observed as a substitute holiday to ensure employees receive their entitlement. This substitution is required by Vietnam’s Labor Code. Source

3. Working on Public Holidays

- Employees required to work on public holidays are entitled to additional compensation, typically at least 300% of their normal wage, excluding their regular daily wage, or compensatory time off as agreed upon with the employer. Source

4. Public Holidays During Paid Leave

- Public holidays that fall during an employee’s paid leave are not deducted from their total annual leave entitlement. Employees retain the full number of vacation days in such cases. Source

5. Additional Notes

- Vietnam’s public holiday calendar includes major national celebrations such as Tet (Lunar New Year), National Day, and Reunification Day. Some holidays, such as Tet, may extend over multiple days. Employers and employees should refer to the annual government-issued holiday schedule for accurate observance and compliance. Source
