Thailand Public Holiday Observance Rules
1. Entitlement to Public Holidays
- Thailand observes several public holidays each year, including national, cultural, and religious celebrations. Employees are entitled to a minimum of 13 paid public holidays annually, as mandated by Thailand's Labor Protection Act. Employers may grant additional holidays based on their company policies. 2. Substitution of Holidays Falling on a Weekend
- If a public holiday falls on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), the following Monday is observed as a substitute holiday to ensure employees receive their entitlement. This substitution is standard practice in Thailand. Source
3. Working on Public Holidays
- Employees required to work on public holidays are entitled to additional compensation, which is typically three times their normal daily wage (their standard wage plus two extra days' pay). Alternatively, compensatory time off may be granted as agreed upon with the employer. Source
4. Public Holidays During Paid Leave
- Public holidays that occur during an employee’s paid leave are not deducted from their total annual leave entitlement. Employees retain the full number of vacation days in such cases. Source
5. Additional Notes
- Thailand’s public holiday calendar includes key cultural and religious observances, such as Songkran (Thai New Year) and Visakha Bucha Day, alongside national holidays like the King’s Birthday. Employers and employees should consult the annual official government announcement for the exact holiday dates. Source
