El Salvador Public Holiday Observance Rules
1. General Observance
Public holidays in El Salvador are established by law and published in the official holiday calendar. They are observed on the calendar date on which they fall, regardless of whether that day is a weekday or a weekend.
2. Weekend Holidays
If a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it is celebrated on that day. There is no automatic shift to a Friday or Monday.
Employees who work on a holiday—whether it falls on a weekend or a weekday—are entitled to premium pay or compensatory time off as specified by El Salvadoran labor law.
3. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)
There is no statutory provision that automatically creates additional “bridge” days to extend the holiday period. Any extra days off are provided at the employer’s discretion or through separate government initiatives.
4. Special Cases
All fixed national holidays—such as New Year’s Day, Labor Day, and Independence Day (September 15)—are observed on their set calendar dates. Any variations to this practice would be clearly outlined in the official government-issued holiday calendar.
5. Additional Notes
Employers are required to follow the official holiday calendar as published by the government.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information, always refer to the current official holiday calendar and any recent legislative updates.
Employees working on any public holiday are entitled to overtime or compensatory leave in accordance with El Salvadoran labor regulations.
