Malawi Public Holiday Observance Rules
1. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Weekend
- If a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it is observed on the next working day. Source
2. Working on Public Holidays
- Employees required to work on a public holiday are entitled to:
- Their regular pay for the hours worked.
- An additional 100% of their normal pay for the hours worked on the holiday. Source
3. Annual Paid Leave
- Employees are entitled to a minimum of 15 days of paid annual leave for those working a five-day week, and 18 days for those working a six-day week. Source

- Malawi recognizes several public holidays annually, including New Year's Day, John Chilembwe Day, Martyrs' Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, President Kamuzu Banda's Birthday, Eid al-Fitr, Independence Day, Mother's Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Source
