Monaco Public Holiday Observance Rules
1. Entitlement to Public Holidays
- Monaco recognizes several statutory public holidays each year. On these days, employees are generally entitled to a day off with regular pay. Source
2. Substitution of Holidays Falling on a Sunday
- If certain public holidays—specifically New Year's Day, May 1st (Labour Day), Assumption Day (August 15th), All Saints' Day (November 1st), the Prince's Day (National Day, November 19th), or Christmas Day (December 25th)—fall on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed as a statutory holiday. 3. Working on Public Holidays
- Public holidays are obligatory non-working days for all employees. However, after consultation with staff representatives, or, failing this, with the employees concerned, exemptions may be requested from the Labour Inspector. When an employee has to work on a statutory public holiday, they are eligible for compensation corresponding to the work undertaken, which may include either payment equivalent to their salary or a paid day's leave in compensation. 4. Public Holidays During Paid Leave
- When a public holiday falls during a period of paid leave, it is not counted as part of the total days of paid leave. Source
5. Additional Notes
- Employers and employees should refer to the relevant labor laws and any applicable collective agreements for specific provisions related to public holidays and work schedules.
