Iceland Public Holiday Observance Rules
1. General Observance
- Public holidays in Iceland are established by national law and are published in the official holiday calendar.
- These holidays are observed on the specific calendar dates indicated in the official schedule.
2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Sunday
- If a public holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on that day.
- There is no automatic substitution to another day unless specifically provided by an employer or a collective agreement.
3. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Saturday
- If a public holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on that day.
- There is no statutory mechanism to shift a Saturday holiday to another weekday.
4. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)
- Iceland does not have a statutory system for automatically adding extra “bridge” days to extend a holiday into a long weekend.
- Any additional leave beyond the official holiday dates is determined by employer policies or through collective agreements.
5. Additional Notes
- Employers must comply with the official public holiday calendar published by the Government of Iceland.
- Employees working on a public holiday are entitled to premium pay or compensatory time off in accordance with Icelandic labor law.
- For the most current and accurate information, always consult the latest official holiday calendar and any recent government announcements or legislative updates.
