Iraq Public Holiday Observance Rules

1. General Observance

- Public holidays in Iraq are established by government decrees and published in the official holiday calendar.

- In Iraq, the official weekend is Friday and Saturday; Sunday through Thursday are regular working days.

2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Working Day

- If a public holiday falls on a working day (Sunday through Thursday), it is observed on that day.

3. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Weekend

- If a public holiday falls on a Friday or Saturday (the weekend), it is generally observed on that day.

- There is no automatic statutory substitution for a holiday falling on a weekend, unless a specific government decree states otherwise.

4. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)

- Iraq does not have a nationwide statutory mechanism that automatically adds extra “bridge” days to extend a holiday into a long weekend.

- Any additional days off beyond those specified in the official holiday calendar are provided only through specific government announcements or via employer discretion under collective agreements.

5. Additional Notes

- Employers must adhere to the official public holiday calendar as published by the Government of Iraq.

- Employees working on a public holiday are entitled to premium pay or compensatory time off as mandated by Iraqi labor law.

- For the most current and accurate information, always consult the latest official holiday calendar and any recent government decrees or legislative updates.
