Isle of Man Public Holiday Observance Rules
1. General Observance
- Public holidays in the Isle of Man are established by law and published in the official holiday calendar.
- These holidays are observed on the dates specified in the calendar, unless an official adjustment is announced.
2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Sunday
- The following Monday will be observed as a public holiday.
- This substitution ensures that employees receive a weekday off.
3. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Saturday
- For some holidays, if the holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on that day.
- However, for other important holidays, if falling on a Saturday the government may move the holiday to the following Monday to create a long weekend.
- The official holiday calendar will clearly indicate which holidays are subject to this substitution.
4. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)
- The Isle of Man does not have an automatic statutory mechanism for adding extra “bridge” days beyond the substitute days provided for weekends.
- Any additional leave to extend a holiday period is determined by specific government announcements or through employer discretion and collective agreements.
5. Additional Notes
- Employers must comply with the official holiday calendar published by the Isle of Man government.
- Employees working on a public holiday—whether on the original date or on a substitute day—are entitled to premium pay or compensatory time off as prescribed by local labor law.
- For the most current and accurate information, always consult the latest official holiday calendar and any recent government announcements or legislative updates.
