Hungary Public Holiday Observance Rules
1. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Sunday
- Public holidays that fall on a Sunday are observed on that day.
- There is no automatic substitution to the following Monday.
2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Saturday
- If a public holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on that day.
- There is no statutory mechanism to shift a Saturday holiday to another day, unless specified by special arrangements.
3. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)
- Hungary has a bridge holiday system for public holidays.
- If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday, the preceding Monday is declared an official day off (bridge day).
- Similarly, if a public holiday falls on a Thursday, the following Friday is observed as a bridge day.
- To control the total number of non-working days, a nearby Saturday is designated as a working day, although many employees may choose to take that day off.
4. Special Cases for Public Holidays
- Specific holidays may have additional arrangements as outlined in the official holiday calendar.
- Any deviations or special instructions will be clearly announced in government decrees.
5. Additional Notes
- The official public holiday calendar is published annually by the Hungarian government and serves as the definitive guide for observance.
- Employers must comply with the official calendar and any government announcements regarding bridge holidays.
- Employees working on a public holiday or on a substitute day are entitled to premium pay or compensatory time off as stipulated by Hungarian labor law.
- For the most current and accurate information, always consult the latest official holiday calendar and any recent government decrees or legislative updates.
