Hong Kong Public Holiday Observance Rules

1. General Observance

Public holidays in Hong Kong are governed by the Public Holidays Ordinance and published in the official holiday calendar. These statutory holidays are observed on the dates specified in the calendar.

2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Sunday

- If a statutory holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a public holiday.

- This substitution ensures that employees receive a weekday off in lieu of the holiday falling on a weekend.

- Employers must follow the official holiday calendar; employees working on the substitute Monday are entitled to premium pay or compensatory time off as required by Hong Kong labor law.

3. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Saturday

- If a statutory holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on that day.

- There is no automatic substitution or shift to another day for a Saturday holiday.

4. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)

- Hong Kong does not have a statutory provision for automatically adding extra “bridge” days beyond the substitution for a holiday falling on a Sunday.

- Any additional days off to extend a holiday period are determined by employer policies or collective agreements, if applicable.

5. Additional Notes

- Employers and employees should always consult the official holiday calendar published by the Hong Kong government for the most accurate and up‐to‐date information.

- Any changes or special provisions will be clearly outlined in the official calendar or accompanying government announcements.

- Employees working on a public holiday—whether on the original date or on the substitute day—are entitled to premium compensation or compensatory leave as required by Hong Kong labor law.
