Greece Public Holiday Observance Rules
1. General Observance
Public holidays in Greece are established by law and published in the official holiday calendar. These holidays are observed on their designated calendar dates.
2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Sunday
- If a public holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on that day.
- There is no statutory provision for substituting the holiday with a day off on the following Monday.
- Any extra leave or benefits for working on a Sunday holiday are provided only through employer policy or collective agreements.
3. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Saturday
- If a public holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on that Saturday.
- There is no automatic shifting of a Saturday holiday to another day.
- Additional benefits for working on a Saturday holiday depend on employer policies or negotiated agreements.
4. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)
- Greece does not have a statutory mechanism for automatically adding extra “bridge” days to extend a holiday into a long weekend.
- Any extended leave beyond the official holiday is provided solely at the discretion of employers or through collective agreements.
5. Additional Notes
- Employers and employees should refer to the official holiday calendar and any recent government announcements for the most up-to-date information.
- Employees working on a public holiday are entitled to premium pay or compensatory time off as required by Greek labor law.
