Fiji Public Holiday Observance Rules

1. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Sunday

- The following Monday is designated as the public holiday.

- This substitution ensures that employees receive a full weekday off.

- Employers must adhere to the official holiday calendar; employees working on the substitute Monday are entitled to overtime pay or compensatory leave in accordance with Fijian labor law.

2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Saturday

- If a public holiday falls on a Saturday, it is also moved to the following Monday.

- This adjustment ensures that the intended day off falls within the workweek.

- Employers are required to follow the official calendar; employees working on the substitute Monday receive the appropriate premium compensation as mandated by Fijian labor regulations.

3. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)

- Fiji does not have an automatic statutory mechanism for creating extra “bridge” days beyond these shifts.

- On occasion, the government may declare extra days off to extend a holiday period; such decisions will be clearly specified in the official holiday calendar.

- Employers may offer additional leave benefits at their discretion, provided they comply with statutory requirements.

4. Special Cases for Public Holidays

- Many of Fiji’s public holidays (such as Fiji Day and Independence Day) are fixed by law. If these holidays fall on a weekend, the official holiday calendar will indicate that they are moved to Monday.

- For holidays of national or religious significance, any deviations from the standard observance are outlined in the official calendar.

- Always refer to the published holiday schedule for any special instructions.

5. Additional Notes

- The official public holiday calendar is published annually by the Fijian government and is the definitive guide for observance.

- Employers must comply with the official calendar and any subsequent government directives.

- Employees working on a public holiday—whether on the original fixed date or on the substitute Monday—are entitled to premium pay or compensatory time off as provided under Fijian labor law.

- For the most current information, always consult the latest official holiday calendar and any recent legislative updates.
