Belarus Public Holiday Observance Rules

1. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Weekend

- In Belarus, public holidays remain fixed on their calendar dates, even if they fall on a Saturday or Sunday.

- If a holiday falls on a weekend, it is not moved to a weekday, meaning no additional day off is granted.

- Employees do not receive a compensatory weekday off, unless specifically granted by their employer.

2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Saturday

- The holiday remains on that Saturday and is not moved to Monday.

- There is no automatic substitute holiday, so employees who do not work on Saturdays do not receive an extra day off.

3. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Sunday

- The holiday remains on that Sunday, and there is no compensatory Monday holiday.

- This applies to all national holidays, such as Independence Day (July 3rd) and Victory Day (May 9th).

4. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)

- Belarus occasionally declares bridge holidays to create long weekends.

- If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the government may declare the preceding Monday or the following Friday as a non-working day.

- These additional days off are typically compensated by making a nearby Saturday a working day.

- The government announces these adjustments annually, usually in December for the upcoming year.

5. Special Cases for Public Holidays

- Radonitsa (Commemoration Day): This is a movable holiday observed on the ninth day after Orthodox Easter, always falling on a Tuesday. The preceding Monday is often declared a bridge holiday, creating a four-day weekend.

- Labour Day (May 1st): If it falls on a Thursday, the government may declare Friday as a bridge holiday, with a nearby Saturday becoming a working day.

- Victory Day (May 9th) and Independence Day (July 3rd): These remain fixed on their official dates, even if they fall on a weekend.

- New Year's Day (January 1st) and Orthodox Christmas (January 7th): If they fall on a weekend, they remain on that day without substitution.

6. Additional Notes

- The Belarusian government publishes an official list of public holidays and any bridge days annually.

- Private-sector businesses generally follow the government holiday calendar, though some essential services may continue operations.

- Employees required to work on a public holiday are entitled to extra pay (typically double rate) or compensatory time off, depending on labor agreements.

- Belarus follows a fixed-date public holiday system, with occasional bridge holidays to extend weekends.
