Azerbaijan Public Holiday Observance Rules
1. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Weekend
- If a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it is automatically moved to the next working day (Monday or Tuesday).
- This rule applies to all official public holidays, ensuring employees do not lose a holiday.
2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Saturday
- The holiday is moved to Monday, meaning that employees get a compensatory day off.
- Both government offices and most private businesses follow this rule.
3. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Sunday
- The holiday is moved to Monday or the next working day, ensuring that employees do not miss out on the holiday.
- This applies to all national and religious holidays, including Republic Day (May 28th) and Independence Day (October 18th).
4. Bridge Holidays (Long Weekends)
- Azerbaijan has an official system of bridge holidays, where the government may declare an extra non-working day to create a long weekend.
- If a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the government may designate Monday or Friday as a day off and compensate by making a Saturday a working day.
- The government announces bridge holidays annually.
5. Special Cases for Public Holidays
- New Year’s Day (January 1-2): If it falls on a weekend, the holiday is moved to Monday.
- Novruz Bayram (March 20-24): A multi-day holiday, with additional compensatory days granted if any of the dates fall on a weekend.
- Victory Day (November 8th): If it falls on a weekend, it is moved to the next working day.
- Eid al-Fitr & Eid al-Adha: Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar, and compensatory days are granted if they fall on weekends.
6. Additional Notes
- The Azerbaijani government announces official public holidays annually, including any adjusted dates for weekend holidays.
- Private businesses generally follow the official holiday calendar, but some industries (such as retail and hospitality) may remain open.
- Employees working on a public holiday are entitled to extra pay (typically double time) or compensatory time off, according to labor laws.
- Government offices and schools strictly follow the national holiday schedule, with additional days off declared when necessary.
