Austria Public Holiday Observance Rules

1. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Weekend

- If a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there is no automatic replacement holiday on a weekday.

- Employees do not receive an additional day off, unless granted by their employer.

2. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Saturday

- The holiday remains on Saturday, and there is no official substitution on another day.

- Employers are not required to compensate employees with an extra day off.

3. When a Public Holiday Falls on a Sunday

- The holiday remains on Sunday, and there is no automatic move to Monday.

- Some private-sector employers may offer an extra day off, but this is not a legal requirement.

4. Bridge Holidays (Fenstertage - "Window Days")

- Austria has a common practice of bridge holidays, known as "Fenstertage" (window days).

- If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many employees take Monday or Friday off to create a long weekend.

- Public-sector employees often receive bridge holidays, while private-sector workers may need to take a vacation day.

5. Special Cases for Public Holidays

- National Day (October 26th): If it falls on a weekend, no replacement holiday is given.

- Christmas and New Year's Eve (December 25th & January 1st): These holidays remain fixed, and there is no additional day off if they fall on a weekend.

- Easter Monday, Whit Monday, and Corpus Christi: These holidays always fall on a Monday, ensuring a long weekend.

- Religious Holidays: Austria recognizes both Catholic and Protestant holidays, with regional variations depending on the state (Bundesland).

6. Additional Notes

- The Austrian government publishes official public holidays annually, but does not move holidays to weekdays if they fall on weekends.

- Private-sector policies vary, but most companies follow the official national holiday calendar.

- Employees working on a public holiday are entitled to extra pay (usually double time) or a compensatory rest day, based on their employment contract.

- Austria has regional holidays that are only observed in specific states, such as St. Leopold's Day (November 15th) in Lower Austria and Vienna.
